Sew All The Things! was born in March 2014 to document my adventures in sewing. My name is Shelly Hokanson, and I’m a professor and web developer from Chicago, transplanted to the much-more-weather-friendly Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I started sewing in late 2013. I had never used a sewing machine before, and don’t remember sewing as a child (aside from a random and vague memory of hand-sewing a pillow). My mom insists that she tried to teach me to sew when I was younger, but somehow I not only fail to remember any of that, but I also fail to remember my mom sewing. Sure enough, back in the day, my mom sewed prom dresses and wedding suits and all kinds of things that are surely well beyond anything I will ever sew.
I started out sewing on a Brother XL-2600i and have since upgraded to a Brother PC-420PRW computerized machine. I can’t claim to know what I’m doing, but I’m having fun figuring it out! It has been interesting learning how to make pattern adjustments, as I almost always need them. I vary between the large end of regular sizing and the low end of plus sizing (size 14/16 RTW and size 22 with a waist mod in standard pattern sizing… usually). I need the FBA (D) more often than not, so there aren’t too many patterns that fit straight from the envelope. Maybe that’s why I’m so enamored with knits!
