With the month of May comes flowers, frolic-worthy weather, and my favorite month on the sewing blog circuit: Me Made May.
For the past couple years, I have been merely a lurker to Me Made May, but this year I’m coming out of the shadows to make my own go of it. Here is my pledge:
I, Shelly of SewAllTheThings.com, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’14. I endeavor to wear a me-made outfit at least once per week and create at least 4 new wardrobe pieces for the duration of May 2014.
Yes, it’s a pretty low bar, considering that many people endeavor to wear a me-made garment daily throughout the month! But I only have a stash of 4 or 5 garments right now, and the first two weeks of May will be eaten up with giving final exams and grading final projects. So I’m going for a goal that I think I can reasonably reach, with plenty of room to go above and beyond.
To kick things off on the right foot, today I am wearing my latest me-made dress, a Colette Moneta. This is my very first Moneta, and I am in love! I cut an XL in the bodice and graded to a 2XL in the waist/hips. I did not make any other adjustments to the pattern – no FBA required! It was a bit strange to trace off, as the shapes are a bit different in the larger sizes, but it all came together well. I may try a straight XL in the future, as this cut is a bit roomy – but certainly comfortable, and an instant TNT pattern.
While sewing the elastic into the skirt, I kept thinking that I was making a disastrous mess of things, but somehow it mostly worked out. I have a couple goof-spots where the bodice joins the skirt (in the front, of course), but imperfection adds character, right?! I still love the dress and will definitely make more Monetas, pronto.
